Where It All Began

A smiling woman running in a marathon, wearing a pink headband and pink athletic shirt, with a race number and hydration belt, listening to music with earphones.
Two women are having a conversation in front of a screen with the words 'Good Morning America' and 'You Are Not Dreaming' in the background. One woman is holding a notepad and a red pen, while the other woman is holding a handmade sign that says 'Sandy Hook Thanks You' with a green heart and a map of Connecticut.

I never set out to do this work originally. It found me.

Thirteen years ago, after decades of working in international business, I found myself unexpectedly at the center of two tragedies: Sandy Hook and the Boston Marathon. One as a responder. One as a survivor. Four months apart. Both changed me forever.

These experiences stayed with me. In the weeks that followed, I saw how many people wanted to help but didn’t know how. We defaulted to silence, distance, or platitudes, not out of indifference, but out of uncertainty. I realized that “showing up” wasn’t intuitive; it was a skill we hadn’t been taught.

What began as an observation became a movement.

Determined to find a solution, I dove into research on how people respond to distress and disruption—and why we aren’t reaching one another. It led to the creation of Showing Up LLC, a social good company dedicated to training, equipping, and empowering others to operationalize empathetic intentions into impactful action.

Author & Thought Leader

Our motto over at Showing Up LLC is this:

“We Show Up, We Lift Up.”

Our work began with peer-to-peer training: teaching people how to show up for each other. It’s the art and science of knowing what to do when someone is struggling: how to listen, how to resist the urge to fix things (we all do it!), and how to stay present when someone needs us, whether it’s a friend, a family member, a coworker, or even an acquaintance you run into at the grocery store. That’s Showing Up.

But after years in the field, I knew we needed to go deeper. What about leadership, where you can’t simply listen and refrain? Where people look to you for direction, clarity, and steadiness?

That’s where Lifting Up comes in. As leaders, we don’t just respond to struggle; we shape environments where people can perform, grow, and thrive. Lifting Up is about leading through uncertainty with presence and precision. It’s where relational intelligence meets performance, and where the human side of leadership becomes a true strategic advantage.

Showing Up and Lifting Up are two sides of the same coin. Together, they help us move from intention to impact: from showing up for individuals to lifting up entire teams, organizations, and communities.

GRAB YOUR COPIES

Don’t run your race alone.

I’ve been lifted up by extraordinary people who’ve taught me that leadership isn’t a solo act. I couldn’t do this work without them!
